Infosys I-Race

Problem with Infosys is it makes too many bad policies and then eventually rule them out to make more bad policies, One of the latest such policy comes as IRACE. Such a Bad Decision that Infosys is facing a melt down in terms of employeesoops Resources, The Attrition rate in infosys haven’t be so much anytime in past. but seems like every day so many employees are leaving the company cause everyday when you open the infosys mail box you get the mails from infoscions saying that they have decided to move to greener pastures.

What is IRACE?

Its a new HR initiative that was introduced by the company last year. Some employees, who the company says form 5% of the total workforce, had resisted the initiative. According to this policy “five bands of assessment — from A to E — earlier which have now been increased to eight — 1 to 8. There is a change in designation as well. For example, a project manager with 3.5 years of experience has been renamed as technical lead and he or she has to work for two more years to become a project manager.”

What is Nandita’s Response?

Nandita Gurjar, senior vice president and group head, human resources, Infosys, said. “There is demoralisation in the team if you allow a manager to get promoted before his or her time, Because he or she may not be mature enough to deal with human issues. We have to make sure right decisions are taken.”

“Our structures are in place and our hiring plan, job description and performance management is connected to iRACE,” she said. “It is a very lean and mean structure.”
The platform defines roles, competencies and proficiency requirements while linking career movement to performance and business focus.

Facts!!

“Some 25% of the employees are against it and 15% are not happy about it,”  and this is why many people are leaving infosys right now and hence infosys is recruting again on a big scale, not only through collages and campus drives but also through Naukri, Monster and Shine.com

Comments from ex-Infoscions

“If I wouldnt have left Infosys then I would have actually bean demoted because of IRACE from S.E(Software Engineer) to S.E.(Systems Engineer)”
“I have worked hard to become the Project manager and now because of this stupid policy I have to wait for another 2 years”
“All these companies treats us as Resources, all they care about is their profits, there is no say of anyone in here”
“Even If you want a release from them, They won’t give it that easily. They keep you hanging for long time”

Infosys is a giant in infrastructure creation too

A company started by seven people 30 years ago from a small house bought on loan is today sitting on 2,085 acres of land across the globe. That's the enviable journey of Infosys Technologies Ltd in creating such a huge infrastructure for its employees.
What was a dream in 1992 has become an unbelievable journey for the Indian information technology giant. As the company's revenue keeps increasing each year its infrastructure creation has also multiplied.
The company has so far invested Rs 9,450 crore in infrastructure with a commitment of another Rs 2,500 crore in the next phase. As of March 31, Infosys has 28 m.sq ft of built-up space – equivalent to over 350 soccer fields – with a capacity to accommodate 1,23,000 seats.
The 2010-11 Infosys annual report provides some fascinating data on the kind of infrastructure it has created over the years for its 1,30,820 employees across the world.

ENOUGH POWER

Take power for instance. As of fiscal 2011, Infosys has a power demand of 81 MW; diesel generating capacity of 134 MW; 48,000 tonnes of comfort air conditioning; UPS capacity of 45 MW, fresh water storage of 33 million litres; waste water treatment capacity of 16 million litres and diesel storage of 1,700 kilolitre.
There are 35 food courts capable of feeding 40,000 people in a single sitting and the company has training facilities of 25,000 seats. While it has 13,800 hostel rooms, Infosys also has a laundry capacity of 7.3 tonnes a day – not many companies would have such a facility.

NETWORK

Infosys said it has network bandwidth of 6,700 mbps connecting over 1,50,000 desktops; 37,500 laptops and 5,500 servers globally.

LOT OF PARKING

Till date, Infosys has created parking spaces for 9,500 cars and 15,300 two-wheelers in its Indian campuses for employees. Another seven multi-level parking lots are under construction for 13,800 cars and 15,500 two-wheelers to cater to the ever increasing employee strength.

SMALL START

However, 70 per cent of its employees still use public transport to commute to work “as a result of our sustained focus on encouraging mass transport,” the company said in the annual report.
In 1992, the Karnataka Government allocated four acres in the Electronics City in Bangalore to Infosys. It was a challenging terrain and poor accessibility and entailed a cost of Rs 17.22 crore when the company's revenue for fiscal 1992 was Rs 8.66 crore.
This did not deter the company with its IPO to raise funds for building the campus to have a built up space of 1,60,000 sq ft with a capacity to seat 1,000 people.
This campus was completed in eleven months and became the most visiting corporate campus in India with over 70 heads of state and global political leaders visiting it. Today, the campus has grown to 81 acres, a distributed low-rise campus of 4.2 mn sq ft of built up space; 26,850 seats and a 487-room hostel.
Till date, the company has invested Rs 1,830 crore in its Bangalore campus and it generates revenue to the tune of Rs 7,900 crore annually.
Infosys is building another 8.3 m.sqft with 40,000 seats. “Soon we are starting a $150-million campus in Shanghai for 8,000 seats,” the annual report says.

Q. I have not got the hard copy but recieved the email that my doj for training is at mysore …plus they told that i will be recieving the accomodation details in mysore … that also not recieved!!!!!!whom to contact?
A. Accomdation details will be sent to you as a mail some 5 days before date of joining…
regarding your call letter:::if u havent received ur hard copy even after 1 and half weeks of u receiving ur call letter through mail try contacting the HR in the email itself.

Q. I just wanna knw if we are allowed to carry Cd’s inside?? I wanna carry 5-6 Cd’s which contain some of my important documents..thats my GRE stuff.. Do we need to declare that CD’s?. Is there any prob if i carry these cd’s??
A. Any kind of data carrier is not allowed inside the campus..weather it may be Cds,floppies,,USB,,ipod,,laptops .try carrying some books. If you want but my adviceis that since you wont get any time to go through that stuff, so why take the hazzel of carrying them.
you can also try having some stuffs in ur yahoo or gmail so that u can study during ur off hours..but the problem is trainees cannot open any personal email account at Mysore campus, So only way to get this data is through relianceworld present in infy campus which is very very expensive and it also does not allow any pendrive, mobile phone, etc to attach to the system. Yup it sucks …

Q. I wul like to know whether checked shirts are allowed on Wednesday and Thrusday. Also is the food hygeinic? i am not allowed to eat from outside since I am recuperating from jaundice. Also is it difficult to get into the fast track batch?
A. NO. tshirts are not allowed on any other days except Friday,if ur training is in mysore u have no other go but for staying in the hostel..food is hygienic in mysore but u wont find the taste good..
try having curd rice ,bread, bun, veg-pulao, etc..the caterers wont use caustic soda ,so no need to worry you have a doctor 24/7 in mysore…but my personal advice is always consult your family doctor as especially north indians and foreigners don’t seem to respond good to their medicines,, also their behavious is quite callous and unprofessional,, plz do take care. if ur condition is bad beacuse of the ailment, try calling the HR to postpone ur date of joining..there will be no probs…many have done it in my batch….if u have CS or IT backgroundthen it is not that difficult u can always manage…

Q. Let me know whether camera mobile phones are allowed or not?
A. All sorts of mobile phones are allowed everywhere within the campus..,, only data carriers like Cds,floppies,,USB,laptops are all not allowed.

Q, what happens when we first reach the Mysore campus??
A. When you reach the Gate No 1 of Mysore campus, you ll see lots of students standing ion a line to enter the gates,, they will ask you to keep a Photo Id Proof and your offer letter in hand,, your luggage will be checked their only and then you ll be let in from gate,, please do not carry any prohibited items,,
AS soon as you enter the gate you ll be provided with your temporary id cards, In those cards will be an electronic chip which will be mapped to your personal details. You will have to use these cards to mark your attendence everyday by swiping-in and swiping-out in card readers in GEC(global education centre)..
Anyways after providing you with your Id cards, you ll be allocated your hostel on a random basis, and then the pick up vans will drop you and your stuff on destination hostels,, if you are lucky you ll get the one which is nearer top GEC,, bt it wont matter much. For rest of the day you can just explore the Campus,, I have already posted the photos in sidebar,, you ll love the campus its so beautiful.

Q. How is the training like?Is it very hectic?
A. For fast track it is very hectic office hours 9:00 to 5:45..after that you will be given with assignments from the very first day..it will take till 8 or more…every week u will have a test and some weekends you have to go on with your projects and also study for the final comprehensive exams…

Q. Do i need to come earlier to choose room of my choice (as it may b first come first basis) or they have already decide who is going 2 stay in which room…..n who will b the room partner????
Secondly i want 2 know what books i should carry with me…can u name all those books which u ppl r using in training……..plzz inform this.
r u still in training or posted somewhere????n do they ask posting prefrences…..in the beginning or at the end of the training??
A. Accomodation will be provided only from a day prior to the date of joining..after checking ur luggage they will direct u to the reception room..they will be noting down ur registeration number(u will have it in ur mail)and randomnly pick up a key and give it to u.
Girls will get sharesd rooms and u cant choose ur room partner..
suppose u find the keys kept in pairs urself and ur friend might get the same room..u can always enjoy there…try caching new friends…most of the time u wont be n ur room
PF(programming fundamentals) oracle is common to all..dont carry any book..u have a library there and can always use it..the course material that they provide is more than enough…u wont find time reading other books..its not knowledge that matters but intellgence and shrewdness.
you will be getting a mail regarding ur posting..u need to rank the DCs in the order of preference..but the entire thing depends on the business needs..n our batch most of them were from chennai…so most of them got mysore bangalore or trivandrum though chennai was there first preference..if u have any reason to go back to ur home town and work u need to specify the reason to the HR in advance..dont wait till the posting details are out..and also keep it as a secret!

Q. Plz tell me whether our parents r allowed into d hostel when they accompany us for d first time?
A. When you are joining your parents are allowed only till food court 1…when u become an employee(after getting ur ID and room no)only Saturdays and that too for a couple of hours .Your parents are allowed to roam in the campus but they are not allowed inside the hostel rooms
Q. I will b joinin infy soon..so i wud like to know few details reg the training here it goes:
1)i m frm IT background, not so good at programming level…..so will i face any prob due to this
2)wht r the subjects i shud b prep for the pre test tht will b conducted on the day of joinin(i mean will thy conduct only comp sub’s like c,c++,java…..or our academic subjects of b.tech).
A. 1::dont worry u will always have references to go through…get some books from the library..but the exact logic can be got only when u sit and think..u have made urself into INFY why worry..u will have that talent u can always get some help from the lab assistants available..
2:::only comp subjects…OS,datstructures,DB,c etc..(not deep into the subject)..u can get help from ur friends who had undergone technical tests and interviews.

Q. I have a doubt related to my final year marksheet…actually my result is out n i am all clear …but we have not recieved our marksheet till now in our college…..so i have all three years marksheets with provisional degree but not the final year marksheet….also i got selected through off-campus recruitment process…….so is is going 2 create any problem…….plz thow some light on this.
A. If you have your marksheets till the 7th sem then its ok..dont worry.get a course completion/provisional certificate from the college..there is no differentiation between off /on campus if you are a fresher..u will have a verification process on the first/2nd day.give one xerox copy of the following after showing the originals..
1.10(sslc..similar)
2.12(hsc..similar)
3.all marksheets that u currently have
4.course completion/prov
5.passport(if u have//the receipt)
6.your call letter(they themselves would have provided another copy along with the hard copy that u got)
It is no probs even if u dont have ur 8th sem marksheet or even the passport or even ur licence during ur training..u will have some 3 months time (im not sure)..my friends still havent got their 8th sem marksheets or even the passport, they r now into production also(of june 26th batch)

Q. How long is the training period?…if it is more than a few months?
A. fast track::1 and half months(for cs/it students who have cleared the exam that they have on their first day of joining)
long cycle::4 months

Q. I wanted to ask you do they have any crietria or any thing when posting later at any of their branch.
A. after getting ur posting details while in training,if the location is not preferable,u can go for swap
criteria::
1..same IBU(business unit…u will have it in ur posting)
2..same release date from training
3.. same stream of training
4..same CGPA range(
range 1–>4 to 4.3
range 2–>4.3 to 5
You must refer with ur HR at that time..
after joining in respective locations ,stil u can try for swapping if both the persons are not in the project..otherwise go for transfer.
PS: Just before the time of your posting you ll be forwarded an excel sheet to enter your preference,, this excel sheet is to be circulated among students only so that they can cut some deals regarding swaping in them selves is some of their friends may get the location that you want,,,Please forward this excel sheet to HR also, cause then they will know your priority and will try to give the locatiuon as per the preference,, this happened during our time.

Q. I belong to cs-It &if i dont clear the initial test well or if i get less marks in it,will it b any problem??????still thy wud place me in the fast track or the slow track???? Also they have asked us to go thru 4-5 books on OS, Databases, C etc. Is it for the exam to decide the fast track or slow track? Please reply.
A. if a person does not meet their criteria during the initial test for fast track, that person will be put into long cycle.there is no probs..they dont want to keep people in long cycle,if they are comforatble with that subject.if u have prepared for any technical interview then no need to go thru these books..
but u can alwys manage if u have cleared all the subjects in the semester and are comfortable with it.
yes,the exam decides whether u r into fast track or long cycle.

Here are a couple of things you need to keep in mind before dropping of to Infosys Mysore campus:

Things you should carry along to campus:
  1. Your formal wear, at least 5 of them
  2. some casual wear for saturdays and sundays. i would recommend atleast 3-4.
  3. matching Ties(very important as without ties you are not allowed in GEC), socks, belts
  4. A pair of each formal and casual shoes
  5. A guitar if you love playing one.
  6. Ipods are absolutely must if you dont wanna go insane with all the studies(everybody needs to relax with some quality music)
  7. Tennis, badminton, squash rackets if you play(Squash is an amazing game you should try)
  8. Most importantly carry a credit or international debit card so that you can pay your expenses for the first month. also you will not get laundry coupons if you dont have a credit/debit card.
Things you may or may not carry(as you can buy them in campus):
  1. nail cutters
  2. pens, pencil, copies and all kinds of stationary
  3. your face washes and creams(but if its  a rare product you should carry along)
  4. Umbrellas/rain coats.. rains in Mysore is like sand in desert.. its everywhere and there is hell lot of it.
Things you should not bring:
  1. LAPTOPS
  2. cds/dvds/pendrives most data carriers excluding phones and iPods.
  3. Towels and bed sheets(you ll be provided with them).
  4. Soaps, mugs,etc
Here is a list of things you should not do in Mysore campus
  1. Smoking inside your hostel rooms, every room has a smoke sensor, you ll be in trouble
  2. Roaming late night on campus roads with your new girl/boy friend.. Your parents might not like the idea (kiddin).
  3. Do not enter the campus gates when you are drunk, some people were to pass the drinking test while entering, they got caught and were taken to infy campus medical clinic and were made to pay heavy penalties.
  4. i wont say Don’t play games in your PC’s but please do not get caught(fines ranging from 3,000 to 5,000)
  5. Please do not push the security alarms and run away for fun(we use to do it), there are security cc cameras that are recording these stupidities..I got caught once..it was ugly :>
  6. No smoochy smoochy on Infosys campus roads ;)
Here is what you will find in infosys campus:
  1. There are 3-5 ATM centers namely GEC(Global education center), ILI, ECC(Employ care center), Food Courts.

  9. There are large no of cafes in every food court there are 6 food courts, my favorite was near hostel 79.

What does My-infy has instored for you??

  1. This is the most important question of the day….u don’t need to be great at programmer when u r joining as a Fresher. Guys don’t be in thoughts that u r going to be future hi fundu Programmer. The only time during which u do some serious programming is during training and u need not be skeptical if ur non comp sci student. Infy teaches every thing from basics. Now infy does not throw out anyone(Until You screwUp pretty bad u will get plenty of chances to pass all the test. Infosys trainings is not very tough but u need to put in some extra efforts.Currently Infy training runs for 6-8 months depending upon if you are a Comp-sci student, or a non-comp-sci student, or you are put into finacle. Generally finacle and non –comp batches have to stay for almost 8 months to complete their training. If you don’t perform well in any of the exams, you’ll be given a second chance, but if you flunk the second chance too,, then that particular module will be considered as dead,, In a particular training you can make only 66% of the module dead. so, attend classes carefully. Forget that you are no more a student for three months. After almost a couple of weeks of hecktick training the moment of joy finally arrives when you get your first pay,, ADVICE:- take out some money to pay ur tribute to GOD and tell ur parents as soon as you receive the msg from ICICI bank that sallary has been credited in your account, They ll be happier.
  2. It doesn’t matter wheather your background is CS or non-CS.Some people are from Construction, Mechanical, Civil, Printing, Chemical and different streams of Engineering. they got same exposure, same salary(around 13,500 for guys and 14,500 for girls ), same treatment, same knowledge. don’t think a CS student would be in advantageous position. All are same, Girls get extra sallary cause they share rooms and guys get single rooms ;) (lucky we).
Generally our training will be broken up into 2 parts. the first part will be a generic program, which will give us basic take on comps in general during that they teach us abt networking, C , DBMS(oracle) and a few other very basic concepts like basic java and all. U have to give tests for individual modules which are online tests multi-choice having NEGATIVE marking.  All is from the course material popularly know as Champak u should be thorough with the course material thats all. At the ends of the genric program u have to write a comprehensive exam, which is in three parts. One 50% of marks which is similar to the online tests u would have taken but with -ve mkng and 50% for the HandsOn practical examination. Though HandsOn seems to be tough but trust me guys, its going to save your ass more than a couple of times for sure,, just practice the daily assignments that you are given after the tutor is done with the daily theory part. After that u will be allotted to a specific stream.Different Streams They can allot you are:
  • JAVA: If you get JAVA U ll love the Stream Days,, You ll be able to enjoy all the facilities of Mysore campus when others are working there ass off.
  • MAINFRAME: These are a bit unlucky cause they ll have to put in a lot of effort. To execute a code that’s only 4 lines long they ll have to code another 100 lines,, which makes there life a bit miserable. BUT wait,, the good news is,,, its an absolute golden chance to be in MAINFRAMES cause almost all the Fortune 100 companies have most of the data in mainframes servers, So if you know mainframes ythen IT industry will always be in love with you and you ll easily get projects and promotions where ever you go.
  • Dot. NET: its as good as java, but the only problem is that you ll get lots of errors,, that to without any reason,, the code that’s not  working today will work the next day absolutely fine and that too without any change,, people who goto dot neet will enjoy it until they reach the 4th module i.e ADO which crashes many of the 5 pointers. (god bless their soule).
  • Open System(OS): guys This is the Toughest Stream you can get into.. we people would never ever want to be a part of this stream simply because it was far above our level(I am not shy to admiting the fact that I might have peed in my pants if I was put in this stream). I guess INFY only puts absolute 5 ptrs in this stream.
  • FINACLE: Generally people are not sent in this stream but some batches from 2009 were given a chance to learn finacle,, here they give you knowledge of the one and only infy prooduct i.e FINACLE. Its easy and you ll enjoy hell lot during training.
to Clear all the exams please go for the slides,, guys if you are thorough with slides,, mark my words noone can fail you. u just don’t need to go for any training before hand…becoz even if u know everything…it doesn’t matter …coz the Slides are the bible… project allocation is totally depends upon INFY.if u have any choice or interest they can’t help u.Its totally depends on their business requirement. Enterprise Systems has highest market value…there are also many mainframes project with infy.so if u do c,java,vb etc before joining it wud not help in training as
1. What they will teach u is different
2. U doesn’t know which specific stream u get there. e.g. if u get open system then java,vb which u did before training wud not help same in the case with internet stream i.e. if u do c beforehand then it wud not help in internet stream. And nothing wud help if u get mainframes as it has COBOL programming.
The facilities at mysore are down to earth. they will provide u cycle to move around. Hostels wud be on twin sharing basis for girls and single for guys ,, good news for girls is that now they are providing single rooms to girls also but its just pure luck that you ll get it or not. So Chillax… and enjoy your rest of the days in full throttle…if still u r thinking of some pre joining preparation then….nobody can suggests u.do whatever u want but don’t think that it wud help in your training due to above mentioned facts.
Time of Training

My friend told infy training is the best and u will have a very bright future after 2 years. he also told me, just concentrate on your job in Infosys for 2 years and then change to some other company and then apply for some good Executive management program from good institute. Just go ahead and do good in infy.

Training Experience by a Infocian.

Dear Friends :
Here i want to share my experience that happened through out the entire training program that i had in Infosys. It had all the moments that could match a college semester and more than that too. Friends, Figures, Exams , Games, Movies, Parties, Professionalism ,Foreigners, DJ Nights and many more.
Journey Starts From Here : Get Set Goooooooooooo ….
I completed my final semester in may 2010 and i got my offer letter with joining date as 21-June-2010 from infosys. I was so happy that there was no need to pass any time in home without any job. Though my parents were so nice to me, i didn’t want to stick in my home after my college.
I got a mail from infosys about the TO DO before joining the company. I was stunned as i had to do lot. Passport, Fitness report, Joining formalities, Documents and many more. So i hardly enjoyed few days and did all these works in the rest of the days. The day came but i never felt overjoyed or anything exceptional.  I started  to Mysore on 20-jun-2010 early morning with my parents. I reached infosys around 11am and met aparna who was my classmate in my college. There were a bunch of CSE guys from our college too. I didn’t know anyone well in that group. After few minutes I was called by infosys securities and went inside the campus. My parents were asked to sit in a food court inside campus.
I took my luggage  and sat under a large umbrella in-front of the mind blowing GEC2 building which can compete with Mysore maharajah palace. Aparna and Keerthana came and sat near me. We had a formal chat and then we finished our official formalities and got our temporary ID cards. Then we were taken to our room in a Tata Sumo and our luggage’s were carried by a golf cart. I didn’t know those guys in the Tata Sumo were going to be my good friends. I  understood that they were all from TamilNadu and so i am. So we had a formal chat and we were all given nearby rooms.
When I was travelling to my room in the Tata sumo, I
saw lot of professionals, rocksters (!?) even gangsters were moving all around the campus wearing the strangest ever clothes I had seen w/wo girls. Girls were walking with Infosys umbrella. Surprisingly I dint hear any vehicle horn except cycle bells. Yes, From sweeper to PM, everyone was using cycles. Most of them were lady birds. I was thrilled of this all new experience and I didn’t understand why they were looking at me with a cunning smile( At the end of my training I too smiled on seeing the freshers. I will tell you later ) .As soon as I reached hostel building, I moved my luggage and opened the door. I was so impressed with the room. An ultra cool wall mount Samsung LCD TV, A king size bed and all the furniture’s were made of wood and the room was 100% clean and perfect. The bathroom was so neat. Suddenly I turned back as someone was calling me “baiyaa” . I met a new character “Ravi” who was the house keeping in charge for my floor. He came to my room and tried to help me with kannada his mother tongue and 50% hindi. As i didn’t understand both, I managed with a few well known English words. I also met one guy from andhra and one more from MP, as both were staying in the adjacent rooms.OMG! I left my parents in food court. I took few snaps of my room and rushed to the food court. They were waiting there with whole lot of expectations. I told them that everything was perfect and I was so happy and so they were. We ate chapatti with egg curry. My mom didn’t like it and as usual I finished last and that’s time. They need to go back to home. I sent them and I didn’t feel anything bad as I was staying in hostel for the past 6 years.

After that in food court I was searching for someone whom I know and I found the guys who were with me in the Tata sumo. I passed the first day with them( here after I will mention them as sairam guys ) . We finished our dinner in FC1 ( Food Court 1 ).That night “kudi” a friend of one of the sairam guy took us to the multiplex where infosys-mysore used to screen movies every weekend. To my surprise the movie was a new release “Ravana”. But the sad part, it was in hindi. I didn’t understand anything except few scenes. Abishek made me laugh even in the climax.
The movie was over by 10 PM and then we took cycles to reach our rooms which was at a distance of 2 KM from multiplex. I lied in my bed till 12 PM as I dint get any sleep. I watched TV and eventually I fell asleep with lot of dreams for the next day.

I woke up earlier though I slept very late. I got ready around 7 AM and done with my prayers. I was asked to report at 9.00 AM. Once all of my friends got ready, we moved to the nearest food court “Amoeba”, finished our breakfast. We reached the Multiplex around 08.45 AM. I saw around 600 – 700 guys and gals standing in two separate queues. Everyone was so eagerly discussing about infy, training procedures and all. I met few of my school mates after a long time. We finished the formalities and went inside multiplex after spending almost 1 hour in the long queue. The Multiplex is the ball shaped building which could accommodate 1000 people at a time. It is the place where the weekend movies are screened. Inside multiplex we were formally greeted by all the infy department heads and we had a session from all of them. It included infy policies to facilities. The entire week went like this and we came to know more about infy and its working culture and all. In the mean time the regular formalities like certificate, passport, NSR verification and new bank account opening procedures were all done.
So my first week was so cool and we had nothing but to enjoy the campus. During the first weekend I visited Mysore palace with Sam and Balamurugan. Also I purchased a sports shoe and few dresses. I found Mysore was not so good for shopping. The next week we were separated as small groups consists of 30 trainees each. We attended soft skill programs and it was very much enjoyable since the educators were so cool and friendly. We made good friends during the soft skill session and endless comedies happened. All the way we unknowingly developed our communication skills. I failed in soft skill exam during my first attempt. That was my first exam in Infy.

Infy Mysore campus has almost all facilities that one need to live. So I didn’t go anywhere even during few weekends. I spent my time in my room and in employee care center (ECC). I learned to play Table Tennis. I learned so many acronyms like IBU, ECC blah blah blah… :) Our technical training started from the week after we finished our first phase of soft skill training. Many people do worry lot about the technical training. Infy has CGPA scales to evaluate trainees. It is not a big deal for an average CS student to finish off the training with good marks. Only those who were extremely poor suffered. But they really learnt well and few of my friends who suffered during training were landed in some other good companies. So With the help of Hard Work and Dedication, anyone can easily clear the training. Once your generic training is over, trainees were shuffled and put in various streams as per the business need. Don’t think too much about the training. You will have some pleasant and unpleasant surprises. So be ready to face them. I assure if you are an average CS graduate then you can do well. Non CS trainees need to study more than CS trainees, But most of the times they end up with very good CGPA then CS trainees.
There are so many interesting places in infy Mysore to remember like food courts, hotels outside campus, GEC 1 and 2, Hostel building, temple near infy campus, tourist spots in Mysore etc.

Training Freshers at Infosys

Infosys – The Organization(older post)
In 1981, a small team led by NR Narayana Murthy and his wife, started ‘Data Basics Corp’ a small time on-site software developer company. The company was later renamed as Infosys.
During its initial years, Infosys struggled to get projects due to lack of reputation, inadequate infrastructure, and government regulations. But the determination of the promoters and their full involvement got them their first order which they completed successfully in time.
Exports increased over time and Infosys set up a Software development center in Bangalore, India. In 1987, it established its first international office in California, US. In 1988, Infosys bagged its first major order from the Reebok and in 1989 bagged another major order from Digital Equipments based in the US. The year 1991 was a significant year in the history of Indian business. In the Union Budget that import tariffs were reduced, taxes were rationalized, and exports were encouraged. Other reforms introduced were free-market pricing of Initial Public Offering (IPO) and relaxation in restrictions on foreign exchange, etc.
In 1993, Infosys successfully completed its IPO. By 1995, Infosys had become the fifth largest software exporter in India. In 1996, it set up its office in UK and then in Canada in 1997.In 1999, Infosys achieved annual revenues of US$100 mn. In the same year it earned the highest level of certification, CMM Level 5, conferred to only a few companies in the world.
It was the first Indian company to be listed on NASDAQ in 1999. In 2001 and 2002 it was rated as the ‘Best Employer in India’ and ‘India’s most respected company’ by leading Indian business magazines. In 2006, Infosys Technologies Limited was one of India’s biggest IT companies and provided IT services, solutions, and consultation globally. By the year 2006 it had over 49,000 employees worldwide.
Entering Infosys
By 2006, there were close to 50,000 Infoscions (employees of Infosys). Getting a job at Infosys was tough as it admitted only 1% of applicants. Out of the total number of applicants, Infosys short-listed only top 20% of students from premier colleges, universities, and institutes.
Infosys in its history had hired many people from different engineering fields who exhibited a high aptitude for ‘learn-ability’ and preferred them over those computer engineers who could not solve problems beyond their technical training.
The short listed candidates underwent a rigorous selection procedure, which involved a series of aptitude tests and interviews. The aptitude tests were significantly tougher and very few candidates cleared them.
The successful candidates were invited for a personal interview. Candidates were judged mainly on their analytical abilities, learn-ability, and communication skills. The selected few candidates were then given job offers.
Need for Training
The dynamic nature of the software and IT industry requires its workforce to upgrade frequently in technology and skills. Companies were focusing on continuous training and development of their employees, which also helped in the reduction of attrition rate.
At Infosys, every new recruit underwent approximately three months of training before they were made billable to clients.
The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) rated Infosys as the world’s best in employee training and development and conferred ‘Excellence in Practice Award continuously for three consecutive years 2002, 2003 and 2004. The award was conferred for its ‘Global Business Foundation School.’ It was a program for all fresh engineering entrants to Infosys to equip them for the challenging software career ahead of them. The program ran around the year and was implemented over several global centers across the organization.
The Global Business Foundation School comprised of generic conceptual courses, platform specific courses, mini projects for application, and an end term project tailored from real life projects. In addition to technical courses, fresh entrants were also exposed to courses on communication skills, interpersonal skills, customer interaction etiquettes, management development, and quality systems.
In 2005 Infosys established ‘Infosys U’, one of the largest corporate training centers in the world.
Infosys U
The ‘Global Education Center’ was set up in 2005. It was one of the biggest corporate training centers in the world. The Global Education Center would run a 14.5 week residential program, which would impart generic and work specific training in technology areas, along with soft skills and leadership programs to freshers.
The center had 2,350 rooms spread across the campus, 58 training rooms, 183 faculty rooms, state-of-the-art library and a cyber cafe. The center had the capacity to train around 15,000 freshers in one year.
The Training Program
After the new recruits joined Infosys, they were taken to Infosys U for a 14.5 week training program. At Infosys U, the freshers were welcomed in Infosys by NR Narayana Murthy through an audio visual presentation. The initial days of the training program, freshers filled forms and learned the values that drove Infosys. During the entire training program, new recruits were trained to work or program different tech applications.
The library had an online database of Infosys case studies to help the recruits. The trainers generally imparted training in hard skills through lectures on the concepts and theory for a few hours and then allowed the recruits to work independently and build their own applications for the rest of the day.
While the training program focused mainly on technical skills, the freshers were also trained in soft skills. There were separate rooms and faculties for soft skill training. Training was imparted on global etiquette, comportment, importance of body language, public speaking, improving interpersonal communication and team-building. The various methods used included, asking the freshers to perform skits, going through several ‘what-if’ scenarios and to practice smiling in front of the mirror.
The campus provided best of food to at an affordable price. Among other options, the campus had the retail outlet of the pizza chain ‘Domino’s Pizza’ where both Western and Indian varieties of pizzas were available. The pizza could also be ordered while the employee was working, but the Infosys culture discouraged working during lunch. The Infoscions believed in taking break during lunch and socializing.
The center had an ‘Employee Care Center’ to facilitate all round development. The employee care center offered recreational facilities such as a gymnasium, a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, bowling alley and a meditation hall. It also had an international-class cricket ground and a multipurpose ground with a six-lane synthetic track, which housed basketball, volleyball, squash, and tennis courts. The campus also housed an auditorium, which had a seating capacity of 1,300 people and three multiplex theatres with a capacity of 150 seats each. The freshers had to work for eight hours every day and at the end of the training program, the freshers had to pass two comprehensive exams before proceeding further. About 1% to 2% failed in the exams.
Infosys U also served as the opportunity to interact with Infoscions working in countries other than India.
Conclusion
Infosys is amongst the few companies, which actually practiced what it preached.
